How to get to the Fort River Trail in Hadley, Massachusetts

Situated in the Silvio O. Conte National Fish & Wildlife Refuge, you can drive to the trailhead at 63 Moody Bridge Road in Hadley, Massachusetts (MA) and park for free in the big dirt lot.

Open daily sunrise to sunset, you’ll see the Fort River Birding and Nature Trail entrance at the start of a cruhsed gravel path a few steps beyond a covered overlook.

What to see at Fort River Trail

As you start walking, you’ll see interpretive signs for monarch butterflies and pollinator species by the overlook just before the trail entrance; it’s a great place to relax on a bench and enjoy the landscape views.

Continuing on you’ll reach a trail fork and going right, you’ll walk over a boardwalk and see lush wetlands.

There are so many opportunities to pause and see beautiful landscapes and observe (and listen to) wildlife.

And along the flat loop, there are a couple of boardwalk observation decks you can stop at. One provides a beautiful vista of the Mount Holyoke Range.

This is my favorite spot to sit and relax for a few minutes, listening to bird sounds and taking in the diverse natural habitats. Even for avid hikers, the Fort River trail packs great scenic variety throughout the short walk.

This trail is really about immersion and moments of solitude. With benches and mile markers at each tenth of a mile along the winding loop, there are many opportunities to observe the natural diversity and, of course, for bird watching.

This easy, flat one-mile loop trail is a great stop in Hadley and when visiting the greater Amherst, MA area for families, people with physical and/or mobility limitations and nature enthusiasts. I was also surprised at how vibrant the blue sky was when I visited here.

Your dog is welcome on leash, and you can bring a picnic too for the first viewing platform at the start of the trail.
