Shining Rock Trail Day Trip in Central Massachusetts
Welcome to Shining Rock Trail in Central Massachusetts
Tucked away in a quiet section of Northbridge, Massachusetts, Shining Rock Trail (aka Richard T. Lawson Conservation Area) is situated on former granite quarries and is home to diverse, lush woodlands and beautiful, sweeping Blackstone River Valley vistas from rocky ledges.
Under a canopy of pine, oak and other tree varieties, you can quickly hike about one-third mile steadily up past granite bedrock to one of the most picturesque overlooks in all Central Massachusetts.

There are two designated parking areas to access Shining Rock. This paved lot on Shining Rock Drive has room for about eight vehicles; another unpaved area on School Street has room for only 2-3 vehicles.
This blog post shows you what you’ll see on the (approximately) one-third mile hike directly up to the overlook from the Shining Rock Drive parking lot.
What to see at Shining Rock Trail
You’ll start hiking up the lush, forested Shining Rock trail that is bumpy with numerous roots and small-ish rocks from the outset. While not difficult, proper hiking shoes or boots should be worn.
Along the way, you’ll see granite rock outcroppings that are remnants of the former quarry site. Some of the granite rock was, purportedly, formed over 600 million years ago.
At this point you’re a few paces away from a small cut-out path that turns slightly left taking you through the trees onto the rocky cliffs and colorful, graffiti-covered overlook. Walking onto the rocky ledges, you’re greeted with a beautiful vista.

The rocky overlook is fairly flat; you’ll notice a step down where you can (carefully!) walk out to the tree line. The side of the cliffs is straight down so always be cautious of how close you step to the edge.

It’s best to hike Shining Rock on a vibrant day when the views really pop.
There’s shady spots to hang out for a while, and you can sit on the granite rocks for a picnic. The nature at Shining Rock Trail is so lush, and this quick hike is great for families with young kids (wear proper footwear for rugged terrain) and adventures with your dog.
MDT Tip: After rain, the steady, upward trail is most likely going to be slippery so plan accordingly with the right gear.
